KUCHING: It is hoped the appointment of Malaysia’s first female Chief Justice Datuk Tengku Maimum Tuan Mat will continue to ensure that the judiciary remain independent and apply fair and equitable laws to its people through efficient and readily accessible judicial and legal system.

Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) secretary Hii Chin Loung said this in a statement when congratulating the chief justice yesterday.

“The appointment of the chief justice is made pursuant to Article 122B of the Federal Constitution whereby the appointment is done by the Yang Di Pertuan Agong on advice of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Conference of Rulers,” he said.

He said the chief justice’s role is of paramount importance as it protects the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.

“The judiciary plays a pivotal role in the administration of justice according to the Rule of Law. And SPA cannot emphasise enough the importance that the judiciary as a whole must be independent and separate from other concentrations of power,” he pointed out.
