KUCHING: Sarawakian artist Gerald Goh has made history as the first Malaysian to paint at Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny, France.

He produced two artworks namely “The Monet Pond” and The Love Bridge” during his visit to Monet’s house in 2017, thus earning him induction into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).

Looking back on his journey, he said it began after the passing of his wife, Belle, and being denied access to paint at the House initially.

“I preserved, and fate, in its wondrous way, opened the door and I was allowed to paint after their opening hours.

“Standing in Monet’s hallowed studio and by the pond, I felt an artistic awakening, a surge of inspiration that ignited a new life within me,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the book launching of The Southeast Asia ArtLIST Vol. 1, the Southeast Asia International Art Camp 2023, and the Malaysia Book of Records Award ceremony “First To Paint” here on Tuesday (Dec 19).

“I have displayed a total of 10 pieces of work done after the visit just to show the change in me, and my works,” he added.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah officiated at the ceremony.
