SERIAN: The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) held  a rabies vaccination, neutering and pet licensing campaign at Serian Community Hall yesterday.

The day-long activity was organised together with Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), the Immune Belt Enforcement Team and Serian District Council.

A total of 44 pet cats and dogs were neutered while over 300 pet dogs were vaccinated against rabies last April.

Saturday’s programme is a continuation of the campaign as many Serian-based pet owners had missed out on the previous one and had requested for another round.

SSPCA president Datin Dona Drury-Wee, in a statement, stated that SSPCA had always advocated vaccination and neutering as humane methods for eradication of rabies.

“We hope to able to partner with more local councils to reintroduce the subsidised neutering campaigns.

“We look forward to engage with more pet owners in Serian and tackle the issues of unplanned pet pregnancies.”

She pointed out that pet ownership was about responsibility towards the animal and their babies.

“Neutering and anti-rabies vaccination can give owners and their pets a better life, free from potential life-threatening diseases.

“We are grateful to have our team of volunteer doctors supporting this campaign.”

DVSS plans to organise and run several more anti-rabies programmes and neutering programmes throughout the year to provide public with easy access to vaccination, dog-licensing, microchipping and neutering.
