KUCHING: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has advised the public to avoid joining a gathering in support of a case set for October 17, related to a riot in Kanowit.

During a press conference on Thursday, Sarawak Police Deputy Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata, voiced concerns about the event possibly disturbing public peace.

He shared that on October 8, PDRM was informed through six reports about calls for the public to gather at the courthouse, which hinted at sedition.

“The riot incident occurred recently, and its first trial will be at the Sibu court on October 17. We are well-prepared and equipped to manage the situation. Our team is currently well-coordinated, so we don’t foresee any problems,” he said.

He warned, “PDRM won’t hesitate to act against anyone trying to rile up the public to gather near the courthouse that day. We will take serious action against those who don’t follow official orders.”

He also urged people not to share or spread any false or misleading information to ensure peace and stability, particularly in Sarawak.
