NIBONG TEBAL: A police report has been lodged against Facebook user David Marshel for allegedly issuing a defamatory statement regarding a religious ceremony.

Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) District Police chief Supt Lee Chong Chern said he lodged the report at 10.04 pm yesterday after noticing the statement uploaded by David, who is also a Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) member, on Facebook.

He said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) information review will be done after obtaining the order to investigate (OTI),” he said in a statement today, adding that any progress of the investigation would be announced from time to time.

Yesterday, David uploaded a defamatory statement claiming that the SPS District Police chief had intentionally refused and delayed permits for a religious procession of the Hindu community. – BERNAMA
