Police rope in 240 suspects, seize drugs worth RM39,000

KUCHING: A three-day statewide ‘Op Tapis Khas’ resulted in the arrest of 240 suspects and the seizure of drugs worth over RM39,000.

The operation helmed by the Sarawak Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), was conducted together with the National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA) from Dec 6 to 8.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri in a press conference, said a total of 240 individuals were arrested for various offences under Sections 39B, 39A (1), 12(1) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952

The suspects aged between 17 and 70, comprised 230 men and 10 women with 147 testing positive for drugs.

“During the operation, we managed to serve 54 arrest warrants for drug cases.

“The arrests were the result of 154 raids carried out across the state with most of them near residential areas, forests and farms,” he said.

Azman added that the operation also led to the seizure of various drugs worth RM39,058 such as 385.78g of syabu, 1.94g of Erimin 5 and 7.85g of Ecstasy pills.

He disclosed that the district which recorded the highest drug seizure value of RM20,669 was Padawan, followed by Miri (RM5,973.50) and Bintulu (RM3,690).

Other than that, two cars in Padawan worth RM20,000 were also confiscated.

“A total of 187 investigation papers were opened and only 10 of them (5.3 per cent) have been brought to court while, the rest are still under investigation.

“Meanwhile, 11 hardcore addicts are being investigated under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail term of up to seven year and up to three lashes of the rotan, if convicted,” he said.

From Jan 1 to Dec 8, the Sarawak NCID has arrested a total of 8,717 individuals, seized various drugs worth RM11.90 million and confiscated properties worth RM3.40 million.

Also present at the press conference was Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.
