KUCHING: The Sarawak government is committed to an extensive upgrade and beautification project along the city’s riverfront, from Kuching Waterfront up to the Satok area this year.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the project would cost RM160 million, with an initial allocation of RM10 million and is expected to take a minimum of four years to reach completion.

“As you know, the transformation of the Brooke Dockyard into a central market is already in progress and nearing completion.

“Besides that, we will also upgrade the infrastructure in Kampung 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 all the way up to Satok,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the launch of Pertubuhan Anak Seni Bandarsah Kuching’s (PASBK) Community Hall last night (July 28).

Abang Johari further added that the work on the Satok Suspension Bridge has already been completed, and there are further plans for beautification works that will extend from Kampung Kudei up to the Segedup area.

“We know that there is a new road connecting Emart, Matang, to Segedup near Batu Kawah through the Tan Sri Sulaiman Daud Bridge. This has been done.

“Therefore, we plan to establish a new settlement area to accommodate our people, such as extended families,” he said.

He also disclosed that the new houses, bungalows, will be available at a cost of RM150,000 per lot, with the Sarawak government covering the cost of filling work, amounting to approximately RM150,000 per lot.

“For the young ones, especially those who just got married, the Sarawak government has also introduced a Housing Deposit Assistance Scheme, offering cash assistance up to RM10,000 to aid them in paying their housing deposits,” he said.

Among those present at the event were Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic and Development Planning) Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Dr Hazland Abg Hipni, Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, PASBK advisor Datuk Abdul Karim Tun Abang Openg, and PASBK chairman Abdul Rahman Zainuddin.
