KUCHING: Parents are advised to prioritise their children’s education so that they can have bright future ahead and at the same time help improve the family’s standard of living.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said the importance of education needs to be instilled in children from an early age so that they have a brighter future.

“Education is very important because knowledge cannot be bought and only with education can we change our destiny.

“I used to be in the children’s shoe and living a hard life, but with education and a high determination to study hard, I was able to change my life to what I am now.

“Thus education can change our lives to be successful and rich, but without education even the rich can become poor,” said Ibrahim during the Back to School programme at Kampung Segedup in Batu Kawa, today (March 15).

The chief whip of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) encouraged students to take up science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

“In line with the changing times, now the world is very dependent on technology, so STEM subjects are very important to increase the competitiveness of students.

“Apart from that, it also can produce skilled human capital in the field of technology in the future,” added Ibrahim.

He asserted that GPS always prioritises the well-being of the community in the Satok state constituency, especially in education.

“We will always hold programmes to help the people here, especially in education, for those who studies at higher education institutions in any courses or programmes that they chose,” hesaid.

In Kampung Segedup, a total of 100 primary school pupils (age seven to 11) received school bags and stationaries in the Back to School programme organised by the Satok Sports Community Club (KSK).

KSK chairman Irwan Zulkarnain Hasbi, who is also a political secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf, said the programme was held since 2015, except for 2021 and last year due to COVID-19.

He added that the club plans to distribute more than 600 school bags to pupils within the Satok area before school re-opens next week.

Irwan noted that the main objective is to ease the burden on parents, while increasing the enthusiasm of students to go to school.
