Prison inmate gets 4 months jail for drug offence

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to four months in prison today by the Magistrate’s Court for attempting to smuggle in 0.4 grams of cocaine in shoe liners while incarcerated at Puncak Borneo Prison.

Abdul Khalid Ali, 37, was sentenced by Magistrate Zaiton after an interpreter had read the charge against him.

He was accused of possessing the drug at the Puncak Borneo Prison’s main gate at around 12.19 pm on November 4.

As a result, he violated Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Statute 1952 and was punishable under Section 12(3) of the same act.

A conviction can result in a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant, together with some prison personnel, checked the accused at the front gate and found a yellow straw tube containing drugs secreted in his shoe inner.

The case items were transferred to the Malaysian Chemistry Department after which a report revealed that the substance was a methamphetamine-type narcotic weighing 0.4 grams.

The case’s prosecuting officer was ASP Rogayah Rosli whiled the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
