More than 12,000 have received certificates in various fields

KUCHING: More than 12,000 former prisoners throughout the country have received skills certificates since the system of skills certification was introduced in 2012 by the Malaysia Prisons Department.

Managing director of Malaysia Prisons Headquarters KP Abd Kadir Rais said the certificates were for skills in various fields such as welding, tailoring and several others from 2012 to 2017.

“Within this year only, 1,945 inmates have received certificates nationwide. We are in the process of introducing a course on the making of frozen food products at Kajang Women Prison,” he said.

Abd Kadir was speaking to reporters after  presenting certificates in Auditorium Sri Sarawak at Kuching Prison by Jalan Puncak Borneo yesterday to those who had completed courses on ironworks and installation and servicing of air-conditioners.

On the number of former inmates who had found employment, he said for the time being, the department did not have a clause in the law that allowed them to monitor former prisoners.
