Public arrest grocery store robber

MIRI: A 49-year-old man was apprehended by the general public for robbing a grocery store at Jalan Piasau Utara 3G here on Monday night (July 20).

In confirming the matter Miri district police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah said that the incident occurred around 7.58pm when the suspect entered the premises with a machete and demanded the complainant (cashier) to give him cash in her collection.

“According to the complainant, the suspect pointed the machete towards her through a counter window.

“The shock and frightened complainant immediately escaped to the top floor of the premises while shouting ‘robber’.

“The complainant then saw members of the public returning to the premises with the suspect being tied up. She then went down and found out that a duffel bag containing RM800 and a Vivo smartphone inside the counter drawer were both missing (stolen),” the police chief said in a statement.

He said police were immediately alerted on the incident and despatched a team to the scene.

Lim added that witnesses saw the suspect escaped on a motorcycle and crashed into two parked cars on the side of the road. The residents apprehended the suspect and took him to the grocery store and waited there until the police arrived.

The suspect, with his hands and legs tied, was taken to the Miri Central police station for further actions.

Also seized from the man were a machete, a “Kuku Kambing” and a black duffel bag.

The man is currently remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 392 of the Penal Code.
