MUKAH: The public here hopes that the Consumer Claims Tribunal can hear claims in this district in future.

Mukah District Officer Shafrie Saili said this would be in line with the concept of the Malaysian Consumer Claim Tribunal (TTPM), which was simple, cheap and fast.

“It will also reduce the costs incurred by consumers for transportation and other expenses including accommodation if the hearing of the claims was held in Sibu,” he said when officiating at the opening and closing of Mukah District Empowering Consumers Education Seminar at Menara Pehin Setia Raja here yesterday (March 30)

His text of speech was read by Sarawak administrative officer (SAO) Peleadzman Ahip.

Some 50 community leaders attended the half-day seminar, which was organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Mukah Branch in collaboration with the Mukah District Office.

The seminar touched on consumer’s rights and responsibility (Session 1), and Consumers Claim Tribunal (Session 2).

According to Shafrie, education of consumers was necessary to equip them with important knowledge.

He said the Sarawak KPDNHEP would continue to be committed in empowering consumers.

Shafrie added education of consumers was actively conducted through various media such as Facebook, Instagram, press releases, seminars and consumerism programmes in the community, schools and institutions of higher learning.

Sarawak KPDNHEP TTPM section head Samuel Mut John Brody and the ministry Mukah branch deputy chief Mohammad Rizal Sehe also attended the event.
