SEBUYAU: The Triso tragedy should serve as a lesson to everyone to cultivate quick response action to help those in need.

Sarawak Fire Department assistant director of operations Henderi Ardimanshah commended members of the public who witnessed the incident and immediately rushed to save the victims.

Nine occupants of a 4WD vehicle including a four-month-old baby were pronounced dead after they were pulled out from the vehicle which had plunged off the ferry ramp.

“In the future if anyone is faced with such situation, we really hope for quick response, not only from the public but also those who are involved in the incident.

“Time is an important factor in such incidents,” he said when met by reporters at Sebuyau-Triso Ferry terminal here on Saturday (Jan 2).

He added that investigations were still underway to identify what actually happened but according to witnesses’ testimonies, the vehicle was instructed to turn back due to full load (on the ferry) and when it was reversing, its rear tires slipped off the ramp causing the vehicle to overturn and fall into the river.
