Raya theft spree lands woman in prison

KUCHING: A former saleswoman will spend Hari Raya in prison after stealing 59 items of cake and biscuit ingredients as well as other goods worth RM471.90 in preparation for the upcoming celebration.

Siti Amira Kamronny, 35, from Kampung Lintang, was sentenced to one month in prison and fined RM1,800 by the Magistrate’s Court here Tuesday (Apr 2) after pleading guilty to charges under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

She committed the offence at a supermarket in a shopping centre along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, around 12.09pm on March 29.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi ordered her to be imprisoned for one month if she fails to pay the fine.

According to the case facts, a security officer found one of the rice department salespersons had taken a trolley containing 59 dry and wet goods without making payment.

The woman headed straight for the elevator to get to the parking lot but was stopped by the officer.

The seized items included four units of K&L Golden Sele, Anchor brand flour (six packets), powdered sugar (two packets), Eesyn Cooking Chocolate (two boards), Purese Duff Browning (four units), Horlick malt milk (three packets), three cans of pineapple, a bottle of Sunquick beverage mix, a pack of Nescafe coffee, eight bottles of food colouring, five bottles of vanilla essence, two packs of brown sugar, three packs of baking powder, four pieces of chicken, four cans of Yeo’s Sri Kaya jam, and six cans of Junjung brand creamer.

Siti Amira admitted to stealing after facing financial problems to buy cake and biscuit ingredients for the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin while Siti Amira was not represented by a lawyer.
