SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng JIn Ek has called for more community leaders to be appointed at Sentosa, Salim area to serve the community better.

According to Chieng, the area under Bukit Assek constituency is not only huge but it comprises of residents from various races such as Chinese, Iban and Malay-Melanau.

“At the moment we only have one community leader here for Malay-Melanau and one Kapitan which are not enough.

“So, I propose at least we have three to two community leaders each for Malay-Melanau, Iban and Kapitan (for Chinese). We also need one or two Penghulu,” he said when met by reporters at the Sacrificial Rites Ceremony held at Masjid Al-Muhajirin, Kampung Usahajaya Baru, Sentosa, Salim here yesterday.

Chieng pointed out that the Sentosa area has around 5,000 households, making it too large to be effectively managed by only two community leaders.

“After discussion with the community leaders, we need to come out with a better structure for the community leaders in Kampung Usahajaya Baru. Similar also to the Iban and Chinese (area in Sentosa),” he said.
