MIRI: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday announced a RM1.3 million state government allocation to support nine longhouses and four kampung in Ulu Suai, Niah.

“This is my gift to the community badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic here. Each longhouses and kampung will be receiving RM100,000 each,” he said after visiting the site of a road improvement project at Jalan Ulu Suai, Niah.

“The improvement of Jalan Ulu Suai Niah, Subis, is a pilot project using the Cold in-situ Pavement Recycling (CIPR) with chipseal (surface dressing) method, making the road tougher compared to the old methods, he said.

The RM67.99 million project, which covers 19 kilometres, is expected to be completed in November next year.

Another RM3 million allocation is for building the 300-metre road extension that is directly linked to the Miri Coastal Road.

According to the chief minister, once completed, the project will boost socio-economic growth in the area by increasing connectivity and providing more convenient access to major towns.

“This project was mooted 30 years ago. Just now, Majang Renggi (Samalaju assemblyman) told me the people here have been waiting for this project to be materialised for the past 30 years.

“Even though I am Sarawak’s Chief Minister for only three years, I’ve managed to turn this project into reality for the people here,” he said.
