KUCHING: The RM1,500 new minimum wage, which comes into effect on May 1, will proceed despite the various suggestions and appeals by various quarters for it to be postponed.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government would not withdraw the decision while the details will be announced by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan soon.

“I would like to reassure that the RM1,500 minimum wage for workers will be implemented on May 1.

“There have been numerous suggestions, appeals to delay it but I give my assurance to the workers that the minimum wage which will be implemented on May 1 will proceed,” he said at a compensation handover ceremony for former employees of Perwaja Steel Sdn Bhd at the Kemaman Umno headquarters yesterday.

Ismail Sabri urged the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) to play an important role in creating a good relationship between employers and employees as cordial ties can enhance the country’s economic capabilities.

He said this is necessary as the roles of both employees and MTUC are important to help economic recovery and pave the way for a brighter future.

“I also hope that labour unions will work with the government to improve the welfare of workers,” he said.

He said employers also need to continue cooperating to ensure that a harmonious environment at the workplace is achieved for workers.

He also called on workers to continue placing their confidence in the government to continue helping them to enjoy a better life.
