SARAWAK needs a new strategic plan to develop ICT infrastructure in its move towards the envisioned Digital Economy.

An initial investment of RM1 billion has been made to develop infrastructure  that will be able to support incoming businesses and investments to the state.

“The new strategic plan will ensure that the state will be able to compete globally within five to 10 years’ time.

“Apart from a strong strategic plan, active participation from industry key players and the people is also essential.

“How can the people participate? By focusing on their self-growth in technical and vocational training as well as science and technology based knowledge to increase the innovativeness of the people right from when they are still in primary school,” said Demak Laut State Assemblyman, Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni in his debate speech during the state legislative assembly (DUN) sitting in Kuching yesterday.

He  added that the advent of digital economy would give birth to many new job opportunities to the younger generations in both urban and rural areas and challenge the traditional outlook of business.

“We are in the era of technology where the Internet is essential for everyday consumption. Hence, to effectively develop the state’s connectivity, more communication towers will be constructed in strategic areas.

“Currently, there are 1,200 communication towers scattered across the state and we need to have 5,000 towers so that connectivity is available across the state,” said Hazland.
