SERIAN: A fund amounting to RM500,000 has been approved for the repair of a collapsed retaining wall in Kampung Hilir here, says Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus.

The village has been frequently affected by floods during the dry season, emphasising the urgency of repairing the wall to prevent further disasters.

Ilus mentioned that his team, along with relevant agencies, including the Serian Resident’s Office, had conducted on-site assessments to evaluate the extent of the damage to the wall.

“Previously, the project was estimated to cost millions of ringgit and was under the purview of the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).

“The DID will hold discussions with the Resident to identify a contractor who can assist with the repair work of the retaining wall.”

He expressed hope that the villagers would cooperate during the repair process and that the work could be completed as scheduled.

During his visit to the village on Friday (July 7), Ilus also addressed the matter of identifying a project site to construct a multipurpose hall in Kampung Hilir.

He was accompanied by representatives from the Public Works Department and the village committee to assess suitable locations for the hall.

“The construction of the multipurpose hall has been a longstanding request from the village, with the intention of having it serve as both a multipurpose facility and an evacuation centre.”

Ilus added that related technical agencies would be involved in soil investigations to study the land and assist in the design of the hall.

He expressed his desire for swift progress before the construction commenced. “The estimated cost is RM1.2mil but with the price of materials increasing, they have to review this.”

He added: “The approval of the project site is eagerly awaited by the village, so we hope for a speedy process, along with smooth implementation and progress.”
