KUCHING: Despite the persistent heavy downpour since this morning (Jan 28), flash floods have affected several areas in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, and Asajaya.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) conducted monitoring in flood-prone areas and assured that roads and villages in these districts remain safe and passable for vehicles.
In Kuching, several roads susceptible to flash floods, including Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Petanak, Jalan Blacksmith, Jalan Pending, Jalan Sekama, and Jalan Satok, are still accessible with no reported dangers.
Roads around Padang Merdeka, Jalan Hospital, Jalan Matang, and Jalan Metrocity, although inundated by waters, are still navigable for both small and large vehicles.
Meanwhile, the water levels at the Sarawak River are reported to be normal, with no signs of an unusual rise.
In Kota Samarahan, firefighters monitored eight villages and neighbourhoods, namely Kampung Rembus, Kampung Baru, Kampung Baru Ulu, Kampung Empila, Kampung Niup, Kampung Tanjung Bundong (Lot Fasa 4), Taman Sri Tuang, and Taman Samar Indah.
Similarly, in Asajaya, firefighters monitored four villages: Kampung Tambirat Lot Asajaya, Kampung Tambirat Nanas Asajaya, Kampung Moyan Ledang Asajaya, and Kampung Moyan Lot Ulu Asajaya.
The department confirmed that these villages are safe and the roads are still passable by vehicles.
The Fire and Rescue Department attributes the flash floods to issues with the drainage system and impeded water flow.
As of 12.30 pm, water levels are receding and there have been no evacuations of flood victims.
Today at 10 am, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a notice predicting thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds over Kuching, Samarahan, and Asajaya until 12 pm today.
