KUCHING: Authorities will be taking action against heavily laden vehicles found using ferries illegally.

The warning comes after a recent incident in Mukah where a lorry’s load had damaged the ferry’s maximum benchmark bar at the Batang Igan ferry port.

Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD) director Norizan Jili when met yesterday (May 8), said they took the incident seriously and would ensure the same thing does not happen again.

“We are going to conduct inspections from time to time and take action against drivers using ferries illegally.

“We will conduct inspections from Kuching to Mukah to ensure such incidents are curbed,” he said after accompanying RTD Senior Director of Enforcement Datuk Lokman Jamaan who was on a work visit to the Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal.

Earlier, Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya called for action to be taken against heavily laden vehicles using ferry services illegally.

In a Facebook post, he requested the Public Works Department (PWD) and RTD to take stern action against those who damage public property and overloading the ferry.

“Lorries like this should be banned and not allowed to use any ferries and roads throughout Sarawak,” he said.
