SIBU: A group of 50 sape enthusiasts took part in a Sape Camp 2023, organised by Kelab Sape Dayak Sarawak (KSDS) here on Saturday.

The one-day camp was aimed at promoting the art of playing the traditional musical instrument among the community.

KSDS chairman, Anthony Abong, said that the programme received an unexpectedly positive response not only from the youth but also children and adults.

“We had participants comprising Ibans, Chinese and Malay as well as sape enthusiasts from Peninsular Malaysia.

“It’s surprising that the appeal of the sape extends beyond the Dayak community,” he said in a statement today (Dec 4).

Abong added that during the programme, participants had the opportunity to experience playing the sape, learn about it, watch sape performances, study ngajat dance, gain basic knowledge of sape crafting, learn kuntau self-defence, attend lectures on the sape, and more.

“We focused not only on the sape but various aspects of Dayak culture. During the camp, we invited renowned ‘Master Of Sape,’ Jimpau Balan, to conduct the traditional Sape session,” he said.
