Saratok Festival opens with enthusiasm despite heavy rain

SARATOK: The Saratok Festival commenced last night at the Sri Kalaka Stage, drawing an impressive turnout of over 1,500 people from diverse races and religions, despite the heavy rain that persisted since the afternoon.

The annual event is renowned for its vibrant and lively atmosphere, exemplifying the spirit of celebration that unites the community.

The opening ceremony featured a special appearance by Naqiu (Boboy), the winner of Gegar Vaganza 2019, along with local Iban artiste Melissa Francis, adding to the excitement of the event.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri expressed his delight at the overwhelming response from visitors attending the opening ceremony.

He highlighted that the success of organising a community-based event like this symbolises the harmony and unity among the people.

“When we successfully bring together people from various ethnic and religious backgrounds, it reflects the fertile ground for harmony and unity,” he stated during the opening ceremony.

Several guests, including Krian assemblyman Friday Belik, Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir; Bell Bernard Aggan, a political secretary to the Sarawak Premier; Betong Division deputy Resident, Mahra Salleh; heads of departments, community leaders and tribal leaders (KMKK), were also present at the event.

Mohamad pointed out that fostering unity and harmony remains one of the primary objectives of the festival.

Additionally, the event aimed to strengthen connections among leaders, government agencies, the private sector, NGOs and the public.

As representatives of the people, Mohamad urged everyone to utilise this gathering as an opportunity to build stronger relationships.

He expressed his hope that the Saratok Festival and Kalaka Regatta would be included in the state tourism calendar, elevating the reputation of Saratok District and Kalaka State Assembly to new heights.

Mohamad expressed gratitude to Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts for their generous contribution to the Saratok Festival Master Committee, led by Saratok District officer Haron Mahidi.

He encouraged both locals and visitors to take part in the Saratok Festival and Kalaka Regatta, promising an unforgettable experience of unity, diversity and celebration.
