SIBU: The Civil Defence Force (APM) is committed to training more volunteers, especially in the rural areas, to provide more efficient disaster relief assistance.

Abdul Wahab speaking to the media.

Sarawak APM director Abdul Wahab Rahim said the move would speed up help and response to emergencies in rural areas as it would take some time for rescuers to reach the location.

“We have around 100 hotspots that are prone to floods, earthquakes and others. This areas, especially those in rural areas such as Long Pedian and Sungai Asap, are quite hard to reach.

“Hence, by having volunteers in those areas, and with training as well as basic facility that APM provides, they know what to do while waiting for rescuers such as the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and APM to arrive.”

Abdul Wahab said this at a press conference after presenting promotion certificates to 57 personnel here on Friday (April 28).

He stressed that the strategy might involve a substantial cost but it would be beneficial in the long run.

He also welcomed contributions from the community or individuals, especially in terms of facility, to APM.

“We are very grateful (for the contributions). The contributions will help us enhance our services to the community.”

Meanwhile, at the ceremony, Abdul Wahab said that “these certificates of promotion might seem small to others but it means a lot to those who work hard to earn them.”

“I hope that the APM personnel promoted today will work harder and be committed in serving the community,” he added.
