KUCHING: Sarawak is planning to develop a new convention centre, which will be used for large-scale business events or local and international concerts.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah hoped that the new facility could cater to at least up to 10,000 people per event.

“Because the convention centre that we have in Kuching is too small in terms of capacity, so we are planning to build a much bigger one here also,” he explained.

Abdul Karim added that other facilities such as Stadium Perpaduan could also be used as a concert hall.

“Of course, this depends on what kind of crowd we are looking at.

“Plus, if they want to organise a concert, it would be wise to hold it sometime in the middle of the year, as the early and middle part of the year are always raining.”

He said this during a press conference after the launch of the upcoming Rainforest World Music Festival 2023 (RWMF2023) at Waterfront Hotel here on Monday (April 3).

Earlier, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said he hoped to see Sarawak organising large-scale concerts at Sarawak Stadium here.

The Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development said the stadium must not only be able to cater to sports events but also concerts as well.

“As we are preparing for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) next year, we are currently looking at the facilities that need refurbishing and upgrading.

“But not only for Sukma. In the future, we also want to see Sarawak Stadium having the capability of holding large concerts,” he added.
