Sarawak household incomes rose in 2022

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a median household income of RM4,978, while the mean income was RM6,457 last year, according to the Household Income Survey and Household Expenditure Survey Report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on Friday.

The median income, which represents the middle value when all incomes are arranged from lowest to highest, stood at RM4,978 per month. On the other hand, the mean income, which is the total income divided by the number of households, was slightly higher at RM6,457 per month.

Comparing growth rates, the median income showed a 3.0 per cent increase in 2022, up from 2.9 per cent in 2019.

Meanwhile, the mean income experienced a growth rate of 2.7 per cent in 2022, compared to 3.4 per cent in 2019.

The report also provided insights into the household income for different administrative districts in Sarawak.

Bintulu had the highest median income at RM8,567, followed by Miri (RM6,449), Kuching (RM5,968), Samarahan (RM5,953), Sibu (RM5,248), and Subis (RM5,194).

Pakan had the highest annual growth rate of median income at 9.9 per cent between 2019 and 2022. In fact, 22 administrative districts surpassed the state’s median growth rate, including Beluru (9.8 per cent), Betong (9.4 per cent), Pusa (8.1 per cent), and others with growth rates ranging from 7.5 per cent to 3.2 per cent.

When considering mean incomes by administrative districts, Bintulu also led with the highest value of RM9,645, followed by Miri (RM7,588), Kuching (RM7,588), Samarahan (RM7,123), and Sibu (RM6,645).
