Sarawak pipe replacement project to cost RM247mil

KUCHING: The construction for the comprehensive pipe replacement project, in Sarawak project will require an estimated budget of RM247 million.

In announcing this, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the pipe replacement project, spanning across 2,700km,  has begun this year.

“Through that, we will identify which is the most critical area, which requires either an upgrade for the pipe, or fully replacing it.

“This initiative is aimed at guaranteeing the safe and reliable distribution of treated water to all designated areas across the state,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after a site visit to the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant here on Thursday.

“This is one of our long term plans, because the project has been previously approved for RM1 billion for five years.

“This goes to show that the state government is very serious at combating the water supply demands,” he said.

Additionally, he urged consumers to be mindful of their water usage, particularly during festive seasons like Hari Raya Aidilfitri, emphasising the importance of conservation for sustainable water management.

“I am aware that the water supply demand increases during the festive season.

“In light of this, it is crucial to use water judiciously and avoid wastage wherever possible.

“I genuinely hope that the consumers take the efforts to preserve water very seriously,” he added.
