KUCHING: A proposal paper for the establishment of the state Fisheries Department will be tabled during the November session of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN).

Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said, the establishment of an autonomous department would streamline the administration of Sarawak’s fisheries sector.

He said the Sarawak government wanted to create a dedicated department to enhance sectoral focus and efficiency, thereby addressing concerns previously overseen by the Department of Agriculture.

“The process of establishing the department is currently underway, with officials conducting initial assessments and engaging with states that already have such departments, including Sabah,” he explained.

Once established, the department will play a vital role in the growth and development of the fisheries industry, while joining other departments responsible for overseeing crucial agricultural products and industries such as plants, fruits and veterinary services.

Dr Abdul Rahman shared these remarks during the Sarawak Agriculture Department’s Agriculture Entrepreneurs Convention Ceremony at USCI Hotel.

He explained that the proposed Sarawak Fisheries Department could streamline operations and provide targeted support to the fisheries industry, a key component of the state’s agricultural sector.

This initiative follows the successful formation of the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak two years ago, demonstrating a commitment to sector-specific development.

During the August 2022 session of the Mini Innovative and Creative Circle (ICC), Minister for Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom announced the establishment of an independent department aimed at streamlining the fisheries sector.

“It is time for us to take action to empower our fishermen in Sarawak, and with this new department, we will be able to make adjustments in terms of management within the fisheries sector.

“We need to make administrative changes so that we can fully benefit from this autonomy,” Dr Rundi explained.
