KUCHING: The movement control order (MCO) in the state will be extended until June 14, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

The decision was announced by the committee in its daily Covid-19 update yesterday (May 31).

“Today (May 31), SDMC has met and decided to coordinate the implementation date of the MCO until June 14.

“SDMC has reviewed the general SOPs issued by the National Security Council (NSC) and decided that Sarawak will continue the implementation of the existing MCO with additional conditions,” it said.

SDMC noted that additional MCO standard operating procedures (SOPs) guidelines will also be implemented on top of the existing ones currently in force.

It said the use of zones as a way to separate different regions in the state has now been changed to districts.

“In addition to that, only two people are allowed to travel in vehicles throughout the imposition of the MCO in the state until June 14,” it added.

The committee has also implemented adjustments and additions to the current list of essential services in the state.

However, the updated list has yet to be informed by the committee at press time.

Previously, SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced that the state will be put under MCO from May 29 to June 11.

He said the move was taken in view of the rise of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak as well as the introduction of new variant of concerns (VOC).

“We need to take more drastic action to curb the spread of Covid-19, before we are in an even worse situation.

“Stricter guidelines and SOPs under the MCO are very important to help reduce the risk of Covid-19 outbreak in Sarawak,” said Uggah.
