KUCHING: Religion has never been a significant issue among the people in Sarawak, said Datuk Lo Khere Chiang.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman emphasised the importance of prioritising the interests of various communities and faiths, stressing the duty of Sarawakians to do so.

“Therefore, as the people of the Land of the Hornbills who always cherish peace and harmony, we are grateful that our society, consisting of diverse ethnicities and religions, can celebrate festivities according to their respective beliefs and traditions in a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

“Cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity is not a barrier for us to become a united and harmonious society based on the spirit of mutual respect,” he said during his speech at the grand opening ceremony of Neon Trend Christmas Market on Wednesday evening.

He added that the people in Sarawak are fortunate because religion and ethnicity have never posed issues to the spirit of unity that has long existed.

“As we can see tonight, our Malay and Chinese brethren are also present to enliven the event.

“Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all attendees when facing any situation, be it political or economic, we must always stand united and work together to ensure the continued peace and prosperity of Sarawak,” he said.
