KUCHING: Fresh pork from Sarawak is now available and sold in supermarkets and wet markets in Singapore.

The Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS) said Sarawak has become a major pig source for the country.

“Starting today (May 3), most of the Singapore market will sell Sarawak pork.

“Since the African Swine Fever (ASF) was found in pigs from Pulau Bulan in Indonesia last month, Sarawak has become a major pig source for Singapore.

“According to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), live pigs are now imported from Sarawak, while chilled or frozen pork are imported from Australia, Brazil, Denmark and New Zealand,” it said on its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, Koh Poh Koon was quoted in the Straits Times saying operations at an abattoir in Jurong have since resumed with a shipment of live pigs from Sarawak.

Koh assured that the SFA was working closely with the local abattoir to sanitise the premises and surrounding environment following the detection of ASF in pigs from Pulau Bulan, Indonesia and investigations were ongoing.

The Jurong abattoir was closed for cleaning after the discovery of ASF in a consignment of live pigs from Pulau Bulan, in Indonesia’s Riau Islands province on April 19.

ASF is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting both domestic and feral swine. However, ASF does not pose a threat to human health and cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans.
