KUCHING: All primary and secondary schools in the state will reopen on August 17.

This was announced by State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when delivering the committee’s daily Covid-19 update on Tuesday (Aug 11).

The reopening comes after a significant decrease in Covid-19 cases in areas near Kuching City in the past weeks.

“After thorough deliberation and looking at the cases in Kuching, Samarahan, Lundu, Bau, and Serian, schools will reopen on August 17,” said Uggah.

On July 14, SDMC announced the postponement of classes for 138 primary and secondary schools;     87 of the schools were in Kuching District, 48 in Padawan District and three in Samarahan District.

The decision to postpone the reopening of the schools was made following an increase in Covid-19 cases in Kuching   that week.

Earlier on, the secondary and primary schools in the districts of Kuching, Padawan and Samarahan were scheduled to reopen on Aug 3.
