KUCHING: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate needs to be set at three per cent instead of six per cent previously, if it is reintroduced, says Dennis Ngau.

The Telang Usan assemblyman said while the rate could be revised later, it should only be done depending on the current economic situation.

“If I may suggest, the percentage of GST could be set lower; say at three per cent to start with, and then gradually increased depending on the situation,” he said today.

He was commenting on how Pakatan Harapan’s presidential council is opposing the reintroduction of GST.

Dennis noted that the price of goods in the country is climbing, alluding it to the worldwide supply and demand phenomena – this despite GST not being imposed.

He said the taxation system had been practised in more than 160 countries worldwide and had been proven.

He pointed out that PH’s opposition was unfathomable as the price of goods soared even though the taxation system was abolished when they took power.

“When PH ruled for 22 months (without GST), the price of goods in my constituency did not drop a single cent.”

Dennis said he was confident in the government’s decision whether or not to re-implement GST.

“Likewise, before GST was introduced the first time, every little matter was looked into in detail. GST was not introduced in our country to give benefit to certain quarters, instead it was meant to benefit all Malaysians.”
