KUCHING: A total of seven clothing designs were produced by participants of the ‘Traditional Meets Modern 2.0: Fusionism’ workshop which was held from Mar 18 till today (Mar 24) and organised by the Fashion and Apparel Unit (SFP) of Kuching Community College (KCC).

The participants are 14 students of Semester 2 and 3, who were taking the subjects SFP 2014 Women’s Traditional Apparel 1, SFP 2032 Fashion Design 1, and SFP 3014 Fashion Design 2 in their course curriculum.

The programme director Sulaiman Mohd Shah, who is also SFP lecturer, said through this workshop, participants are exposed to pattern layout steps and fabric selection design ideas.

“The workshop also helps them to strengthen their sewing techniques in making a garment,” he said.

He said the participants also learned the diversity of fashion designs while developing ideas and confidence in improving the way to display a design.

The four-day workshop was conducted according to the ‘Project Runway’ method, whereby each student was given a budget and timeframe to process sketches of design ideas in groups of two with the guidance of SFP lecturers.

Next, they were taken to the fabric store to purchase tools and materials to come out with their designs according to the allocated budget.

During this period, students underwent skills training, namely communication, teamwork and decision-making, as well as making full use of available resources to produce their sketched designs.

This method is utilised to allow students to experience a workplace atmosphere which emphasises the aspects of time management, finance and team spirit to fulfil the customers’ demands.

KCC director Suharyati Sulaiman and deputy academic director Nurul Dafiqah Kamarulzaman also had the opportunity to witness the presentations of students on the last day of the workshop.
