Seven fraud cases of online transactions recorded

MUKAH: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Mukah Branch recorded seven fraud cases of online transactions involving a total loss of RM5,205.89 from January until June 18 this year.

Its Mukah branch chief Salihin Den said of the total cases, three had been settled and all the money amounting to RM1,447.89  was refunded.

He added the refund comprised RM250 participation fee for futsal activity by the event manager as decided by the Malaysian Consumers ClaimTribunal (TTPM), while RM1,153.44 was refunded by an airline company (Air Asia) for the ticket booked prior to the movement control order (MCO), but the flight was cancelled due to the restriction, and RM44.45 was refunded  by the seller (Shopee) for an order which was cancelled.

“Four cases are still under investigation involving a sum of RM3,758  where the items purchased online as advertised via Facebook were not received by the consumers ,” he said during a press conference at the ministry’s office here on Friday (June 19).

Salihin revealed that those cases involved the purchase of a handphone VIP Golden Number for RM1,500, Adidas brand football shoes (RM170), one unit PlayStation 4 and one unit Logitech G29 driving force race wheel (RM1,988) and two units of Redmi Model Note 8 brand smartphone (RM100).

He, however, said of the four cases, one had been settled, except having to request assistance from other branches to go to the address of the suspect for further investigation.

Salihin advised consumers planning to order items through online to be very careful to avoid being cheated.

He added if possible use online platform with established names such as Lazada.
