Seven-month prison term for man in drug abuse case

KUCHING: A man has been sentenced to seven months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here on Wednesday (Nov 22) for involvement in drug abuse activities last October.

The accused, Affee Jarni, 27, pleaded guilty to one charge read in the presence of Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

The court also ordered the accused to be under police supervision for two years after serving the prison sentence.

According to the charge, he was accused of introducing prohibited drugs, methamphetamine, and amphetamine into his body. He committed the act at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department office at IPD Kuching, around 2.50am on Oct 16.

Therefore, the accused was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) and sentenced under Section 15 of the same act, carrying a penalty of a fine up to RM5,000 or a maximum of two years in prison if found guilty.

In the case facts, on Oct 16, around 2.50am, the police from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department at IPD Kuching apprehended a man suspected of involvement in drug abuse activities.

The initial urine screening of the accused tested positive for drugs. The urine sample report from the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital confirmed that the accused was positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ammarsoffi Yusoff, requested the court to impose a severe sentence on the accused as a lesson.
