Hornbills of Sarawak webinar

KUCHING: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) will be hosting a webinar on hornbills in Sarawak next Wednesday (July 21) in conjunction with Sarawak Day.

“The webinar will provide an excellent opportunity for the public to learn more about hornbills and their conservation in Sarawak,” said SFC chief executive officer  Zolkipli Mohamad Aton.

The webinar titled Hornbills of Sarawak is from 2pm to 4pm, and those interested can register at https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0kd-igpzgiHdLgiZUz_tDdd-lN7oFekeR9, or follow the live

stream on SFC’s Facebook page.

“The hornbill is an important bird and a cultural symbol for the people of Sarawak. The Rhinoceros hornbill is the state’s emblem, however, many Sarawakians cannot identify our own state bird.

“Hence, in conjunction with Sarawak Day, I invite you to join this webinar and learn more about hornbills.”

The panellists are SFC hornbill experts – deputy chief executive officer 1 Oswald Braken Tisen; head of totally protected area management Dr Victor Luna Amin; head of habitat research and conservation section Connie Geri; conservation officers Lily Sir and Sim Lee Kheng; and park warden of Piasau Nature Reserve, Louis Velda Dominic Salon.

Moderating the webinar will be head of biodiversity conservation and research, Dr  Melvin Gumal.

Oswald will talk about the overview of hornbill conservation in Sarawak; Victor on the folklore and taboos associated with hornbills in Sarawak; Connie on the plants and trees used by hornbills; Lily and Sim on the Hornbill project at Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, and Louis on the oriental-pied hornbill at Piasau Nature Reserve.
