MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) is planning to install signage on areas or roads to indicate the authorities responsible for their maintenance works.

Mayor Adam Yii said the move is necessary so that members of the public will know who to deal with if they have issues with the areas or roads concerned.

Yii said of late complaints against public amenities were not correctly directed to the authorities concerned and this resulted in a lot of unnecessary misunderstandings.

“Some people chose to spin and confuse the public when they were unhappy with public spaces or infrastructure in the city, so there is a need to put up signage to facilitate addressing the related issues,” he said during MCC meeting yesterday afternoon.

Yii was responding to councillor Keith Chin’s suggestion to put up such signage to indicate the authorities responsible for upkeep and maintenance works.

Chin pointed out that people were frequently blaming the wrong authorities over overgrown grass along protocol roads, blocked drains and broken down pavements.

MCC noted positively that starting Jan 1 grass-cutting work had begun after the federal government, through the Public Works Department, allocated funds for the purpose.

For two months (November and December) last year, no grass-cutting was made because funds were not available.

Meanwhile, MCC is urging its 2018 lucky draw winners who have yet collect their prizes to do so as soon as possible.

According to the council, out of 84 draws, 56 have not collected their prizes.

The ‘Lucky draw for Assessment Rates 2018’ was open to all property owners in Miri, and winners were announced in October last year.
