KUCHING: In the village of Kampung Bukit Kudi, Rohana Sahari, a 42-year-old single mother of five children, navigates the delicate line between sacrifice and love for her family.

Recently visited by non-governmental organisation Hope Place, Rohana shared her touching story, revealing her daily struggles and unwavering dedication to her children.

Rohana’s children range in age from three to 20 years old. Her eldest, Dayang Siti Nazihah Abang Bayner, is studying early childhood education in Kuala Lumpur, while three of her children are still in school.

“With a toddler at home, Rohana cannot work full-time, so she earns her living as a part-time cleaner and babysitter, bringing in only RM500 per month. Despite her financial constraints, Rohana ensures her children succeed in school while maintaining a neat and tidy home,” Hope Place said in a statement on Monday (April 15).

To provide for her family, Rohana turns to the nearby stream for fishing and collects wild vegetables when the weather permits. Her resourcefulness and determination are evident as she faces challenges head-on.

“Dayang, her eldest daughter, shares her mother’s independent spirit and works part-time while studying to cover her hostel and daily food expenses. Home for the Aidilfitri holidays, Dayang enjoys baking festive cookies with her mother. Despite financial struggles, Rohana ensures her family has a joyful celebration.”

Rohana’s second daughter, 17, aspires to follow in Dayang’s footsteps by continuing her studies after finishing Form 5 this year.

Rohana recently applied for social welfare assistance and is awaiting a response.

Meanwhile, Hope Place continues to support the family with basic food aid and milk powder for Rohana’s toddler.

Rohana’s story is one of resilience, love and sacrifice, illustrating the profound strength of a mother’s devotion to her children. For more information or to support this cause, contact Hope Place or Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK) at 082-505987.
