BAU: The repair of culverts within the road heading to Siniawan (old Bau-Kuching road) will be completed by the end of this month.

Public Works Department (PWD) Divisional engineer Liew Ming Chek said the repair was supposed to be completed on Sunday (January 7).

However, continuous rain which occurred throughout the Siniawan area over the past week had delayed the completion of the repair works.

“This is because, the 500 metres array was closed for three months since October of last year due to the cracked road surface, and it incurred some damage to the embankments and soil erosion,” he said.

He explained that the erosion had necessitated the project contractor to construct additional reinforcement to the damaged area.

“Another challenge that we are facing during this repair work is that the pipes which connect the water flow to residents in Siniawan.

“The thing is we do not want to disturb that pipe. So we have to be extra careful when doing this repair works,” he said when met by reporters during a site visit to affected area on Monday (January 8).

Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh wants the repair work to be expedited as the road is the main connectivity for users to Bau and Kuching.

“On behalf of the PWD, I apologise to the road users for the delay as we did not expect this would happened in the first place.

“We do not want to take the risk of opening this road to the users while the repair is still going on,” he said.

He appealed to the public to give time to PWD to finish the works so that the road could be reopened as soon as possible.
