SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has set its sights on elevating the town’s cleanliness as a top priority for the upcoming year

SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said the council was recently honoured with the National Asian Clean City 2024-2026 award, a recognition that sets the groundwork for further efforts in this direction.

“Sibu is a small town but it is growing. In order for people to notice us, we need to have a clean town. This is our biggest challenge for next year,” he said in his speech at the SMC Annual Dinner here last night (Dec 29).

The event was officiated by Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

Ting also outlined plans to expand the mechanical street sweeping initiative to commercial areas beyond the current coverage limited to downtown zones.

“Presently it only covers downtown areas. We will try to extend this to commercial areas,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining the cleanliness and dryness of public toilets, including those in coffee shops.

“SMC has the most public toilets. I hope next year we will double our effort to make our toilets clean and dry,” he added.

Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley and others.
