SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is taking action to deal with the growing problem of eateries operating without licenses here.

Chairman of SMC Clarence Ting Ing Horh said the importance of a meeting between SMC, the operators of these unlicensed eateries, and the Fire and Rescue Department to address the issue.

Ting said that the situation is becoming more serious. People are opening restaurants and cafes without obtaining the necessary fire permits for their premises and then expecting SMC to approve their operations.

This is not acceptable, he said.

He explained that SMC cannot approve operating licenses until these eateries dismantle their illegal extensions and comply with the required regulations.

According to Ting, the public has been complaining that no action is being taken, and it is important to address their concerns.

In another development, Ting provided an update on the council’s efforts to improve the lighting system in the town. The council has started replacing the old 150-watt street lights with energy-saving 100-watt LED lights.

Ting mentioned that the council has already replaced the street lights in several areas and plans to continue this project in more locations.

The next areas to receive LED lights include Jalan Teng Chin Hua (formerly Old Airport Road), Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai, Jalan Pahlawan, Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah, and Jalan Wawasan.

A total of 388 LED lights will be installed in these areas, and it is estimated to cost RM387,000.

Ting also mentioned that the council will seek funds from Pelawan assemblyman, Michael Tiang, to support this project.
