SMC to install over 90 CCTVs in Central Market

SIBU: The popular Central Market here will be equipped with high-performance closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras that will cover all surrounding areas.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Small Traders and Hawkers Division chairman Cr Albert Tiang Ming Ing on Friday (Feb 25) said that a total of 93 CCTV units would be installed.

He explained that the installation was scheduled to be completed by the end of April.

“Work started on Feb 11 and this would be done in stages.

“The CCTV has a 360-degree viewing angle in addition to being able to work at short and long range.”

Tiang revealed that as soon as installation was completed, every corner of the market could be monitored at all times by using only a smartphone.

He added that SMC would also install three CCTV units at Taman Selera, Jalan Khoo Peng Loong.

Subsequently, the use of CCTV would also be expanded to Taman Selera Muhibbah, Sungai Merah Market, Jaya Li Hua Market, Taman Selera Harmoni, Taman Rejang Market and Grand Height Market in stages.

Meanwhile, Tiang confirmed that the hawkers of Jalan Tiong Hua Market would move to the recently completed temporary market at Jalan Chew Siik Hiong on March 1.

The Jalan Tiong Hua Market building was previously not opened to the public due to safety concerns as cracks were discovered on the walls and the building was later demolished.
