MUKAH: Parents and staff of Community Development Department (Kemas) kindergarten in Kampung Petanak here hoped that repair work on the kindergarten would be completed soon.

A survey by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday however found that the repair work had yet to begin.

Since Jan 13, some 31 children aged between four and six together with two teachers and two assistant teachers were squatting at an old wooden chapel about 200 metres from the kindergarten.

The children and staff were ordered by the authorities to move to a temporary location after the building was found to be unsafe for occupation.

It was learned that the chapel committee had allowed the Kemas kindergarten children and staff to use the building.

The wooden single-storey Kemas kindergarten building was believed to be about 50 years old.

Built on wooden stilts, the building was formerly used by the local Women Institute (WI) as its office and activity centre before Kemas kindergarten occupied it.
