KUCHING: Sarawak Energy’s celebration of International Women’s Day 2024 serves as a compelling demonstration of community strength and highlights the urgent need to foster an environment where every individual is empowered to contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and equitable world.

In line with the principles of women’s empowerment and community support, Sarawak Energy recently held its annual International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 celebration through an innovative initiative called ‘Spin a Wheel for a Cause’ last March 8 to 10.

This charity event took place at Spin with Kai, located in Brighton Square, and marked the first in-person gathering since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019.

Organised by the Sarawak Energy Leading Women Network (SELWN) in collaboration with Hope Place, ‘Spin a Wheel for a Cause’ exemplifies this year’s theme while making a meaningful impact on the community.

SELWN is a professional networking and engagement platform for women employees of the Sarawak Energy Group.

The initiative drew an enthusiastic turnout of 150 participants who engaged in five spinning class sessions to raise funds for 55 families in need, with a specific focus on single mothers and women among 300 disadvantaged families in Kuching and its surrounding areas.

This year’s IWD theme, ‘Inspire Inclusion,’ aligns with Sarawak Energy’s commitment to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as promoting women’s empowerment in building a progressive organization.

Following the spin classes, the IWD 2024 celebration concluded with a celebratory lunch at the Raia Hotel & Convention Centre, attended by Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

In his address, Sharbini emphasized the significance of the day’s events and Sarawak Energy’s ongoing commitment to nurturing an inclusive environment that values and advocates for gender equality.

Drawing on the themes of empowerment, resilience, and collective efforts, he highlighted the organization’s initiatives and the progress made towards creating a more equitable workplace and society.

He also expressed gratitude to SELWN, Hope Place, and all collaborators and attendees for their dedication and contributions to the success of IWD 2024.

Sharbini underscored SELWN’s vital role in driving women’s empowerment through targeted development programs, networking opportunities, and mentorship.
