MIRI: The state government has been very proactive in caring for the environment and this is reflected in its various policies over the years, said Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew today.
“The government has strongly emphasised on sustainable development in its agendas,” he added.
Speaking at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Lutong’s environmental programme held at Piasau Nature Reserve here, Ting said it is crucial for the people to be environmentally conscious to protect Mother Nature.
He also stressed the importance of teaching children how to care for the environment from an early age.
“It is a way to move forward in the future. To protect our environment, we must change our habits and one of the ways is to create awareness among our people and inculcate good values in our younger generation,” he said.
On the school programme, Ting lauded the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) for collaborating with SMK Lutong in hosting it.
At the event, Ting also announced an allocation of RM10,000 to SMK Lutong to help it carry out environmental programmes.
Earlier on, NREB’s Environmental Quality Controller Justine Jok Jau Emang pointed out that it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of the environment.
