State to help promote sports for health and unity

KUCHING: The state government has assured that it will continue to assist the Education Ministry in promoting sports among its staff.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip said the state government was committed to this because it saw sports as being capable of strengthening harmony and unity among Malaysians, besides helping to improve the people’s health.

“The state government will continue to assist and work with the Education Ministry to strengthen sports among the ministry personnel,” Talib said at the national-level Malaysia Sports and Culture Education Service Council (MSKPPM) Festival closing ceremony at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Thursday.

The MSKPPK Festival, which was held for a week from Dec 15 to 21, involved 17 teams assembling a total of 2,029 players and officials of the ministry throughout Malaysia.

A total of 10 events were contested where Selangor was crowned as the overall champion. In second and third places were Sarawak and Perak, respectively.

Netball, football (senior category), volleyball (female category) and tenpin bowling were won by Selangor; followed by football (veteran category) won by Kedah; golf won by Sabah; cultural band performances won by Perak; volleyball (male category) and chess won by Sarawak; and sepak takraw won by Johor.
