Steady rise for SMK Methodist

SIBU: SMK Methodist held its annual prize presentation ceremony here on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, its principal Philip Ling said the school’s grade point average in the PT3 examination has improved from 2.71 to 2.74.

He said the number of students who achieved 10As also increased from 20 in 2017 to 30 in 2018.

“As for SPM, the passing percentage achieved was 93.4 per cent and we managed to produce 72 straight-A students and with a total 19 subjects offered, 12 subjects recorded 100 per cent passing rate. Meanwhile for STPM, we have six straight-A students,” he said.

Thus, he thanked all teachers who prepared the students for their examinations because without their dedication, the students would not have done as well.

Furthermore, Ling said that SMK Methodist has also performed extremely well in terms of curriculum.

“Our school has just recently won five gold, two silver and six bronze medals in Piala Pembangunan Atlit MSS Sibu, which is the best our school has ever achieved for the last five years.

“For taekwondo and wushu, we have won quite a number of medals in various national and international competitions. We have successfully grabbed one gold medal and two bronze medals in the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Taekwondo Championship; three gold medals in the 4th Gewinn Malaysia Open International Taekwondo Championship; and two gold medals and one bronze medal in the Brunei Taekwondo Championship 2019,” he said.

Ling was also proud that SMK Methodist’s students, Brandon Ting and Edison Tie who represented Malaysia in the Shenmo Cup Mathematical Arithmetic International Competition, won a gold and silver award respectively.

Ting also won a silver award at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad, he added.

Besides that, he said Samuel Haw and Basil Kuok who represented Malaysia at the World Mathematic Invitational Mini Math Creative competition in Japan also won a silver award each.

Last but not least, he said Johanna Yew who represented Malaysia in the World Mathematical Games Open in Taiwan won a bronze medal.

“We are proud that these students successfully raised the name of our school and our country in the international arena,” he said.

The event was officiated by Datuk Ding Lian Cheon.

Among those present were president of school board of management John Ting, and members of school board of management.
