KUCHING: The public should stop speculating on the case of Eric Chang Wei Jie, who believed have been murdered and let the police do their jobs.

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth secretary-general Milton Foo said he was aware that the public, including social media users have begun to make various assumptions, regarding the incident.

“I understand that many people are sad, angry (after police reclassified the case as murder) and wanted to know the truth as soon as possible – but please stay calm and let the police and other authorities conduct the investigation thoroughly and professionally.

“We should wait for the police to announce or update us on the progress of the case, instead of making baseless allegations or speculations,” he said at a press conference held at the SUPP headquarters here today.

“Let justice be seen to be done for the little young boy and prosecute the assailant (if any),” he added.

At the same time, Foo also expressed his gratitude to the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Marine Police, and Fire and Rescue Department for their efforts in searching and investigating the case.

The four-year-old boy with a nickname ‘Duck Duck’ was reported missing from a house at Lorong 2, Taman Riverview on March 7 and a police report was lodged on the same day.

His mother Dynasty Chang, 25, said she had sent her son to a babysitter – who is also a friend – on Feb 21 as she had to undergo a medical procedure.

Yesterday, Kuching district police chief in a statement said the police have reclassified the case from Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001 to Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

He said two of the suspects, the babysitter and her husband, arrested on March 9, would be further remanded to assist in the investigation.

He said the police would be leading the search-and-rescue operation in the Muara Tebas area, together with the Marine Police, Fire and Rescue Department and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
