KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) is proposing stricter penalties for those involved in child abuse and sexual offences.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said this proposal is part of the Malaysian Children’s Commission Bill which will be presented during the parliamentary session in October.

“We’re seeing more cases of child abuse, especially sexual offences. Even if this issue isn’t directly under our ministry, we’re stepping up to make suggestions.”

“We believe in stricter punishments, like whipping. Some may not agree, but if it happens to their family, they might see it differently,” Nancy added.

She said this after officiating at the Jelajah Kasih Keluarga: Segulai Sejalai event at Kampung Muara Tebas Community Hall today (Sept 3).

Nancy assured that this proposal wasn’t made on a whim, but after extensive talks with different stakeholders.

She also noted the proposal aligns with the Child Act of 2001 (Amendment 2016).
